My New Policy On Comments

The comments in my blog have been totally out of hand this past week or two. People got very rude to me and to each other.

I got pissed off and just turned off comments completely, but that kind of cripples my blog. The whole point is the dialogue.

Of course the word policy comes from the same root as police, and sadly, my new policy is to police. That is to say, if anything rude comes to my attention in the comments - any kind of rudeness at all - I will delete the comment without explanation. You don't have to agree with me, or with each other, but bad manners of any kind are banned. You can say anything you want, but you have to say it politely.

  1. No offense, but I think you overreacted to my attempt at improving on your suggestion.

I didn't use bad language, I didn't insult anyone and I hope it was a coincidence that you shut down comments after I posted it.

"Eh" isn't a snort. It's a shrug. I felt your analogy was good, but not great. As you say (now): "You don't have to agree with me."

In my very humble opinion, you were simplifying the concept too much, in eagerness to make the "sale".

I do, however, relish the irony of you trying to convince me of something by saying, "you'd have to be a total idiot to think that condescension was a form of salesmanship".

  2. That's what I do. This is my blog policy:

All polite comments are welcome. The rule of thumb is "don't be a jerk". Life is too short to argue with people on the Internet.

Comments with links are held in moderation until the link is verified. Links relevant to the discussion are welcome. Protected from spam by Akismet. Comments containing the .info or .biz domains are automatical banned.

    HTML formatting allowed.

  3. @joe - your comment was just one of many. I totally overreacted to your comment, because it came after a whole string of other comments in other threads, many of which were much worse.

That irony is pretty funny. But it made perfect sense when I wrote it!

@engtech - it's necessary, isn't it? fortunately I didn't get any death threats, or Photoshopped rape imagery, so I didn't have to pull a Kathy Sierra at least.

  4. Whew. (Not a word either.)

I was like, OK, maybe I could have phrased it better, but I didn't quite get why it made you so angry.

Anyhow, I'm glad to hear you'll be having moderated comments instead of none at all. :)
