Ruby, Rails, Java, and PHP

One thing about Rails which is kind of weird is that it seems to be the place where a lot of Java people and PHP people are meeting each other for the first time.

Even though I came into the Ruby community via Rails, I think I pretty much fit the standard pre-Rails Rubyist profile: eclectic, curious, experienced in multiple languages, etc.

So you've got this sort of initial population of explorers and intellectuals, and then there's this massive influx from two directions at the same time: both from the world of big corporate enterprisey stuff, and from the world of fast and loose page hacking.

It's kind of like an interesting discussion over coffee being suddenly swamped under whole armies of pirates and beauraucrats.
