Screenwriter's Essay On Remix Culture

Like Larry Lessig says, what we have today with copyright and downloads is essentially the same thing as the Prohibition era, where virtually everyone violated the law regularly and systematically. Pretty much everybody knows the law on downloads is bullshit - but a powerful minority is keeping those laws in place, and pushing even crazier ones through Congress. We're all living as criminals, because a small number of very wealthy, ruthless, dishonest people have inordinate control over the law-making process. This creates a polarized situation, an "us vs. them" mentality.

I blogged recently about tech bloggers imagining screenwriters on the "them" side of that divide, instead of doing some research and finding out what's what. The truth is, many screenwriters understand and embrace remix culture.
