I've blogged before that I believe the Turing Test was beaten in the 70s, but nobody is willing to admit it because the guy who did it did it as a joke. (I sometimes think academics believe having a sense of humor is cheating.)
Another example of effective Turing Test victories that will probably not be acknowledged by academia: poker bots.
