DVD pixel resolution is 852 wide by 480 tall.
SDTV, standard definition TV, is 852x480 widescreen, 704x480 4:3 (classic TV "square").
For HDTV (high definition TVs) you need 1280x720 or 1920x1080.
I do some motion graphics from time to time, and I'm doing a Keynote presentation which I may want to adapt for DVD-quality video or above. For making video on my Mac, this is all the info I need. Of course, there's more info out there. More info is kind of the problem, though; I don't want epic detail, I want a simple answer right away.
